TikTok Video Won't Download? Here's Why

TikTok video not downloading? It's rarely random. There are about ten usual causes, and the error you see (or the lack of one) usually points to the right one.

Symptom and likely cause

Private or friends-only posts

If the account is private, or the post is set to Friends or Only me, only approved viewers can see it, and only while logged in. Download tools see the page the way a logged-out visitor does, which means no video.

There's no workaround, and you shouldn't trust any tool that claims one. If you have a good reason, ask the creator to send you the file.

Deleted or taken down

When the creator deletes a video, or TikTok removes it for a guidelines or copyright issue, the link stops pointing at anything. Open it in TikTok: "Video currently unavailable" confirms it.

We don't store TikTok videos, so a removed video can't be recovered from us either.

Blocked in some countries

Some posts, often ones with licensed music or content restricted by local law, are limited to certain countries. A video that plays for you might not be available where our servers are, or the other way round. Trying later sometimes helps, but there's no reliable fix.

The link points at the wrong thing

We need a link to one specific post. These won't work:

• A profile link (tiktok.com/@name with nothing after it)
• A sound or music page (tiktok.com/music/...)
• A hashtag, search or For You page link
• A LIVE stream
• A link to a TikTok repost on Instagram or YouTube

The right link contains /video/ and a long number, or it's a short vm.tiktok.com or vt.tiktok.com link. In the app, Share > Copy link always gives you the right one.

It's a photo post

Slideshows made with photo mode are a set of images with a soundtrack, not a video file. Paste them into the TikTok photo downloader to get each image. For only the music, the MP3 converter works too.

The Story expired (or won't resolve)

Stories disappear after 24 hours, and then the link no longer resolves. Even live public Stories sometimes fail, because Story support is less reliable than video support. Try the Story downloader as early as you can.

Stuck inside an in-app browser

If you opened our site from a link inside TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat or Discord, you're in that app's built-in browser. Many of them quietly block file downloads.

• iPhone: tap the menu (three dots or a compass icon) and choose Open in Safari.
• Android: choose Open in Chrome or Open in browser.

Content blockers can do the same. Pause yours for this site and try again.

Too many requests in a minute

To keep the tool quick for everyone, each visitor gets a limited number of requests per minute, and only a few downloads run at once on the server. If you see "Busy right now", wait a few seconds and press the button again. Pasting the same link repeatedly won't speed things up.

Saved but won't play

The download worked, but something on your device isn't cooperating:

• Windows plays sound but no picture: the video is HEVC. The PC and Mac guide has the fix.
• Can't find it on iPhone: it's in Files, not Photos. The iPhone guide shows how to move it.
• Not in your Android gallery: check the Download album or Files by Google, as the Android guide explains.
• A 0 KB file: the connection dropped mid-download. Delete it and download again.
• It plays but looks blurry: that's usually the upload itself. This quality explainer shows how to check the real resolution.

The Save video option is missing

In the TikTok app, Save video only appears when the creator allows downloads, and TikTok keeps it off for accounts under 16. That's a clear signal the creator doesn't want copies going around, so please respect it. The Allow Downloads setting guide explains how it works.

People often search for a way to download TikTok videos that can't be downloaded in the app. For a public post, a link-based tool still works, because the setting only hides TikTok's own button. Treat the result as a private copy, not something to repost.

It's your own post

If the video is yours and set to Only me or Friends, no web tool can see it. Use the in-app Save video option, or follow the guide to saving your own TikToks and drafts.

A quick reset that fixes most cases

1. Copy the link again with Share > Copy link.
2. Open it in a normal browser tab and check the video plays while logged out.
3. Paste it into the SSSTikT downloader in Safari or Chrome, not an in-app browser.
