TikTok's Allow Downloads Setting, Explained

Every TikTok creator has a switch that decides whether viewers see a Save video option on their posts. Viewers wonder why the button disappears, and plenty of creators don't know the switch exists.

Here's how it works from both sides, including what it can and can't prevent.

What the switch actually changes

When Downloads is on, anyone who can see your video can open the Share menu and tap Save video. That copy carries TikTok's watermark with your username.

When it's off, the option disappears for other people. You can still save your own videos, and this guide to saving your own TikToks and drafts covers the ways to do it.

Account-wide: turning it on or off

In the TikTok app:

1. Go to your Profile.
2. Tap the menu icon (three lines, top right).
3. Tap Settings and privacy, then Privacy.
4. Tap Downloads and toggle it.

TikTok moves menus around between app versions. If the path doesn't match, search "downloads" inside Settings. The account-wide switch applies to existing videos as well as new ones.

Per video: one post at a time

• Before posting: on the final screen, open the privacy or "more options" section and look for the downloads toggle.
• After posting: open the video, tap the three dots or Share, choose Privacy settings, and adjust Allow downloads.

Useful if you're happy for fans to save a tutorial but not a personal clip.

Teen accounts

TikTok sets these defaults for younger users:

• Under 16: downloads are off and can't be turned on, even on a public account.
• 16 and 17: downloads are off by default. A teen can switch them on after a pop-up explains what that means.

Private accounts and downloads

On a private account, only approved followers can see your posts at all. Strangers can't save what they can't view, and outside download tools can't reach private posts either.

What an in-app save looks like

A video saved through TikTok's own button comes with:

• A moving TikTok logo and the creator's @username on the video
• A short end card with TikTok branding

That watermark is why so many people look for a clean MP4. It's also why creators should know that a clean copy of a public video can still be made.

The limits of the setting

Turning downloads off:

• Hides TikTok's Save button. That's all it does technically.
• Doesn't stop screen recording. Phones and computers can record anything on screen.
• Doesn't stop third-party tools, including ours, from fetching a public video, because the file is served publicly for playback.

The only way to fully control who sees a video is to make it private, or not post it. Copyright still protects you, though: if someone reposts your work without permission, report it under TikTok's intellectual property policy.

If you're a viewer and the button is gone

The creator made a choice, or TikTok made it for them because they're a minor. Our advice:

• Use Favorites (the bookmark icon) to keep the video in your TikTok library.
• Share the link rather than a file.
• Ask the creator if you need it for something specific.
• Don't download videos from minors' accounts. Protecting teens is exactly why that restriction exists.

If you're a creator deciding

There are fair arguments both ways.

Leave it on if:

• You want reach. Saved videos travel through group chats and other platforms with your @username on them.
• You make tutorials, recipes or tips people want to rewatch offline.

Turn it off if:

• The video shows your face, home or kids and you'd rather it stayed on TikTok.
• You sell or license your content.
• You've had reposts without credit before.

Either way, a toggle is only one layer. Keep your original files and know how to file a takedown.
